Domaine du Clot de L’oum
AOC Cotes du Roussillon Villages, Caramany, France
Available Wines: Numero Uno, Saint Bart Vieilles Vignes, La Compagnie des Papillons
Eric and Leia Monne’s vineyards are situated high on the slopes of the Agly Valley in the communes of Belesta and Maury situated northwest of Perpignan. 18 hectares of vines are divided among 33 parcels positioned at 400-600 meters above sea level with soils composed of granite, schist and gneiss. Syrah, Grenache and Carignan are fostered according to organic farming practices without the use of herbicides, insecticides, or chemical fertilizers.
Manually harvested, with minute yields of 15-20hl/ha, the grapes are destemmed, hand sorted and vinified with naturally occuring yeasts. Temperature controlled fermentation with daily pigeages and remontages for maximal phenolic extraction are followed by a 12-18 month elevage in 1-3 year old barrique purchased from Domaine Romanee Conti. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Eric and Leia’s persistence with organic soil and vine management articulates a deep expression of their extraordinary terroir. The promotion of deep root systems, meticulous yield regulation, in combination with the higher, cooler climate slopes, helps to impart enhanced aromatics and produces wines with a striking balance between phenolic maturity and acidity.
Eric’s stated winemaking goal—“to achieve minerality, freshness and fruit” is captured to perfection in every bottle he produces.
